Mixed Media continues to offer exhibits and receptions that stray far afield from the typical Art Opening and Exhibit. As winter waned it called on the art community to submit artwork interpreting their visions of the theme "Mermaids" for a juried exhibit that opens Friday, April 4, 5 to 8 pm at the Mixed Media Art Center at 323 South Main Street, Doylestown.
Local artists answered the call submitting nearly 70 pieces. In addition to well known artists Robert Beck, Dot Bunn, Peter Petraglia, Susan Roseman and Steve Messenger, 42 works created by the extended artistic community of the river towns were selected to be shown, including works on canvas and board, with sculpture, both traditional and soft, fabric art and mixed media represented, capturing all the whimsy and beauty the subject engenders.
"This is not only a fun show but a creative and affordable one as well," says manager Margaret Mattheson, "the first-time buyer or the collector will be able to discover wonderful works to start or to supplement their collections."
A fun, kitschy and family-friendly Opening Reception will follow, featuring wine and light, non-seafood refreshments. Visitors can bring their cameras to be photographed as mermaids in life-sized mermaid cutouts. Ethel Merman, Ravel, Debussy, Saint-Saens and live whale "songs" will serenade visitors. Mermaid Exhibit tee-shirts and notecards will be available as well as some of the most unusual and affordable art you will see in a while.
