February 8 - 25, 2008
Bucks County is famous for its lush artwork celebrating the exceptionally lovely rural landscape in which we are fortunate enough to live.
But we also live in troubled times, with news every day that jolts, provokes and disturbs. The exhibit "In Troubled Times" opening at Mixed Media Gallery on Friday, February 8, 5 to 8 pm offers a look at this world through the eyes of some of Bucks County's foremost artists.

Car Bomb Series "Taxi" by Selma Bortner
Renowned printmaker Selma Bortner offers several pieces from a recent series inspired by news images from the war in Iraq. Selma was particularly haunted by an image of a woman caught on camera shortly after a car bomb attack; her print of this captures all the horror and raw immediacy of the moment.

“Maiden Voyage” by Linda Guenste
Painter Linda Guenste has been working for over a year on a series of provocative and disturbing paintings depicting children with gas masks and weapons.
Annelies van Dommelen says “My troubled times have all been recorded in paint, as well as the good times. The pieces that were done during times of stress, uneasiness, challenge, loneliness, pain, sickness, etc., have helped me to get it out and onto something else. I have always been drawn to the work that tells a story and as we all have felt human feelings, there is nothing to be afraid of in art. The paintings shown at this exhibit are rarely seen, as few galleries are “brave” enough to show them for fear of upsetting someone and not being able to sell them. When I think of all the scary things in this world, a painting that expresses an emotion, or tension or thought even, is the least harmful. This show excites me because of the involvement that a person has to make…a good painting.. makes me think and feel and recognize that I have that emotion in me...Remember, one must have, and will have, the good and the bad, hot and cold, sun and rain, sad and happy. There is room for it all in the complete human, one informs the other.”

“We’re So Sorry” by Stacie Speer Scott
Stacie Speer Scott says of one of her pieces, ‘"We're so Sorry" is as much about humanity and the destruction we bring upon each other as it is about war and gun violence. The flag like and globe elements are apparent in the work and reference our world of wars and human to human violence. The important large figure is a collage piece from a target shooting range. Seeing the target as a human figure full of shot holes was striking to me and it was the beginning of the work. The flower speaks to the beauty and growth of humanity, the other side, the irony.”
Nancy Bentley, John Augustine and Susan Watson each share very personal and individual images that grew out of their responses to living in today’s world.

The premise of this very unique exhibit is simple. All works are limited to 5x7, all those submitted are exhibited, all are sold for $40 and, most importantly, all works are sold anonymously. Some of this area's most well known artists will be displayed next to someone showing their work for the first time. Only after a piece is purchased is the name of the artist revealed. Hopefully that art has been bought strictly on its merit… or maybe because the buyer thinks they have spotted a deal to add to their collection. |

Lambertville Sculptor Wendy Wilkinson Gordon and Chalfont painter Margaret Cornillon Mattheson share the new gallery space at Mixed Media, Doylestown, Bucks County, with an exhibition entitled 'Obsessions'. Both artists have been exploring for many years the strange and sometimes unsettling beauty of natural forms. |

"Tenik" by Wendy Wilkinson Gordon |
|
Wendy graduated from Syracuse University in 1982 with a BFA in sculpture. During the spring/summer of 1980 she studied painting and sculpture in Florence, Italy. She worked at Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture from 1983 to 1990. She is co-owner of the Harry H. Gordon Studios in Lambertville. Wendy says of her work, "I believe that my work communicates on many different levels. I am making a statement on nature and on the structures it utilizes to become stronger and to survive. Look at a compound leaf, the eye of a fly, or the tentacles of a jellyfish and you find multiple forms that work together towards one achievement survival. Survival is life's most basic instinct and I am interested in exploring how it is achieved." |
| |
|
Margaret earned her BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1969. Life intervened in her work and it wasn't until 1990 that she came back to painting. Her work has been created in near total privacy since then. During that time she has completed less than ten paintings. While her subject matter, undersea organisms, in actuality are miniscule, the paintings themselves are very large, "I like them to be nearer to my size." She offers no explanation for why she paints what she does and says she will continue as long as she is still interested. |

THE FRONT ROOM EXHIBITION
Featuring the works of Mixed Media's Open Studio artists in the Gallery's renovated new Gallery space. |
|
Following a winter-long facelift, Mixed Media re-opened its new Gallery space Friday, March 30!
The Mixed Media Gallery has earned a well-deserved reputation for unusual, fun and eclectic exhibitions celebrating working local artists. Formerly housed in the art store, the gallery now breathes new life into the original Doylestown Victorian era townhouse attached to the store at 323 South Main Street. Pocket doors, Victoria-era wall sconces, exposed brick walls, hardwood floors and original architectural details complement the clean lines and gallery lighting creating an ideal gallery space. |

|
|
The first Exhibition in the new space, fittingly celebrates the work of those area artists who frequent Mixed Media's Front Room Open Studio. For many years the Front Room Studio was set in what is now the new Gallery space, where three nights a week artists and beginners drop in to do figure studies from live models. Now the Front Room Studios work out of Mixed Media's third floor Studio. |

42 That Matter
|
42 WORKS, $400 AND UNDER BY 42 THAT MATTER collects the artists that have been essential to Mixed Media, the Gallery, and the Front Room Studios, presented with gratitude (and priced incredibly!…) |
Opening reception: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8th, 5-8PM |

"Oscar Wilde", oil on board by James Bennett |
This will be the final show in the gallery's current space before reopening in the renovated front of Mixed Media at 323 South Main Street, Doylestown. Paying tribute to artists that have been vital from its opening in June 2001 until now.
"We opened with a solo show by Robert Miele," said Tom Sperling, director of the gallery, "and so we will lead off with Bob again. It was really difficult to make the other selections from so many but I think these 42 represent all aspects of what Mixed Media Gallery tries to be for the local art community."
The exhibition includes some of the area's most renown artists, such as Joseph Crilley, Jacques Fabert, Alan Fetterman, Bonnie MacLean, Pat Martin, Taylor Oughton and Patrick Walsh. "All of these respected artists have gone out of their way to support the gallery," says Sperling, "and continue to do so even now, by exhibiting their work at such a generous price." |

"Three Strawberries", oil by Barbara Lewis |
Classes and workshops have become an important part of Mixed Media, and the work of artists who have taught these classes will also be on display. These include: Jennifer Gilroy, James Himsworth III, Barbara Lewis, Denise MacIntyre, Hillary Reehl, Stacie Speer Scott, Nancy Shill, Steve Smith, and George Thompson.
Other artists included who have been participants in those classes and workshops are Lucia Deauville, June Jones, Nan Kirstein, Simon Mauer, Paul McGinn, Nancy Mills, Lai-Sin Price, Mary Luz Robinson, and Ed Stewart.
Mixed Media has always employed artists who have shared their abilities with the public. Among those being shown are Jackie Calderone, John Huber, Melissa Russell, Evan Reehl Ryer, Glenna Ryer, and Ann Toney. Special mention should be made of Janeen Swartz, co-founder of Mixed Media and Mary Wilsbach Katz, owner of Sabine Rose Gallery. |

"Trauger's Farm", Paul McGinn |
All forms of art are to be represented, such as abstract art by Alan Hines and Emily Thompson and illustration by Pat Achilles and James Bennett. Wildlife and nature artist Robert Barrett is also featured.
Sperling chose other favorites for their unique offerings including Kay Burchinal and Annie Haslam. "There could have been many more", he notes. "Mixed Media has been able to exist because of the interest and involvement of this community. Together they are an outstanding group of people who come together to make a good show. I am in their debt." |

40 ART is a show of art for art’s sake. It is an open call show, with none of the work framed or larger than 5X7 inches. The catch is that all of the art is displayed anonymously. Some of this area’s most well known artists will be displayed next to someone showing their work for the first time. Only after a piece is purchased is the name of the artist revealed. Hopefully that art has been bought strictly on its merit-or maybe because you think you spotted a deal.
And the art will be a deal with every piece priced at $40. The gallery will be strictly closed until the opening reception. All work will remain on display until August 31. At that time, arrangements can be made to have the artists sign the work at their convenience.
Mixed Media Gallery presented this same concept last summer and the show was incredibly popular. No restriction was mandated on subject matter as long as the work exists in the 5X7 perimeters. Art includes painting, drawings, photography, sculpture, prints and a few surprises. It is fun to see the artist’s names evolve as the summer progresses.

Mixed Media Gallery presents THE MALE NUDE from April 7th to May 16th, 2006, with an opening reception April 7th, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
The male nude, of course, has been classic subject matter in art from the earliest times. These days though it seems to have fallen in stature, for reasons that are unclear. This exhibition will explore the male nude through the interpretations of eight artists who are currently working in various manners and with various media.
TED GARRISON has made the male figure his primary subject matter for years. The intent of his oils is to focus on the irony of the muscular strength of the model and what vulnerabilities are revealed under the probing eye of the artist.
SIMON MAUER is interested in the human form as a way to study our own existence, the "human condition." While both male and female figures express much of the same emotions, the male figure more often presents challenges in expressing power and stability that this artist strives to capture.
For GEORGE THOMPSON, the male anatomy and construction is easier to define than the female's; the bones and muscle are clearer. While influenced by the classics, modern masters from NC Wyeth to Frank Frazetta have helped him push the male form to a different, more exaggerated and free level, finding new expressions to bring out the humanity of the male form.

"John Resting", charcoal and pastel, by George Thompson |

HILLARY REEHL has set out to produce a series of paintings that offer variations on a visual theme, using the language of the male figure as a medium for conveying expression. Using a lean, bony, and angular model, who is evocative of the ascetic figures of Egon Schiele, Reehl hopes to invoke Schiele's spirit and meditate on the universal theme of desperation.
Two artists, DAVID GILLEECE and JOHN HUBER, are both exhibited in this show and being exhibited. Both have worked as models and are depicted by other artists. Huber's work is animated with the tension of bodies on display in the modern world. Indeed he brings the subject to an ultimate and intimate depiction by persuading his father to be his model. For David, who is the only photographer in the exhibition, the attempt is to keep it simpler. His goal is to reflect his interaction with the subject, to make art out of the mainstream, truths that in everyday life go unspoken.
In early planning stages, Mixed Media curator, Tom Sperling, specifically wanted to invite BONNIE MACLEAN to be a part of this exhibition. Maclean's explorations of the female nude are outstanding and he wanted to see how she might approach the male figure. Intrigued with the challenge, she has created a new and personal presentation for this exhibit to be displayed publicly for the first time.
Painter PAUL MATTHEWS deals directly with the observation that the depiction of the male seems to offend the sensibilities of more people than that of the female. "If we paint female nudes, why not males?" he asks. "I'm an equal opportunity painter." |

GRAPHITE, CHARCOAL, COLORED PENCIL, PASTEL PENCIL, INK OR CONTE
Drawing, often an underappreciated art form, will get its due when Mixed Media Gallery in Doylestown presents Juried Drawing Exhibition 2005.

Best In Show: Untitled, by Steve messenger
The juror for the show was John Horn, sculptor and drawing instructor from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Horn, who had the daunting task of selecting from among 240 entries, expressed surprise and enjoyment by the variety of work submitted. Indeed, a pleasure of the show is seeing drawings from respected artists who often work in another medium such as sculptor, George Anthonisen or painter Alan Fetterman to first timers finding their style.

First Place in Color: "Amanda", by George Thompson
Best In Show was awarded to Steve Messenger, of New Hope, for his untitled (and very large) charcoal and graphite drawing of a horse. First Place in Color Award went to George Thompson, of Doylestown, for his pastel entitled "Amanda". First Place in Black and White was awarded to Daniel Anthonisen, of Point Pleasant, for his inked sketch of the Point Pleasant Bridge. Soncini, of New Britain.
Barbara Lewis, of Doylestown, and Mary Wilsbach Katz, of Ardsley, were selected for their works using a combination of charcoal and conte crayon.
Colored pencil was the choice of Nina Bolfing, of Chalfont; Betty Minucci and Cathy Ulasewicz, of Doylestown; Virginia Rosa, of Mechanicsville; Dorothy Heine Rudolph, of Sellersville; and Anthony Volpe, of Philadelphia.

Out of Africa, by Mary Luz Robinson
Conte crayon by itself was selected by Bryan Oliver, of New Britain; Roger Smith, of Furlong; and Justin Wood, of Doylestown.
